Diana Luchtbus

Diana Luchtbus looks straight at you. No soft transition, no flattering light, no apology. This preset removes what conceals and leaves what is. The name refers to Diane Arbus, the American photographer who in the 1960s portrayed those others preferred not to see. Her work was uncomfortably honest. So is this.

Technically, the preset works with a cool, bright exposure that simulates daylight flash. The contrast is medium, not dramatic, but firm enough to map the structure of a face without exaggerating it. Shadows are open but not lifted. Highlights hold detail. The grain is fine and present, enough to give the photo a tactile quality without making it coarse. Colors are restrained, almost clinical, with a slight cooling in the midtones that renders skin realistically but without warmth.

This preset works best in portrait photography where you place the person at the center without obscuring the environment. Faces with character, people in their own spaces, close-range street portraits. Environmental portraits also fit well, people at work or at home. The preset does not handle soft, diffuse light conditions well. Use it in bright daylight or with a flash at low power. With flat studio strobe light, it loses its edge.

You choose Diana Luchtbus when you want a portrait that does not invent a story. When the subject is allowed to be themselves, with everything that comes with it. Not necessarily beautiful, but always real. Photographers used to skin-smoothing presets will find this an adjustment. That is the point. The preset pushes you to think about what you are capturing and whether you are willing to show it.

A practical note: after applying the preset, lower the exposure by half to one stop when shooting outside in bright light. Highlights on a face can clip quickly in those conditions. A small mask adjustment on the skin, reducing clarity slightly, gives you more control without changing the character of the preset. Leave the grain alone. It belongs there.
