Forge

Forge is a preset that feels like heat. Not literally, but in everything you see: the dark, contained image that suddenly ignites in the highlights, the weight in the shadows, the glow that seems to burn somewhere deep inside the frame. This is not a preset for soft morning light or pastel tones. This is raw material.

The preset pushes the black point well down and pulls contrast tight. Shadows become deep, almost impenetrable, but details remain visible if you look closely. The highlights carry a warm amber glow, a colour you associate with hot metal or a furnace at temperature. The midtones are cool and restrained, which intensifies the tension between warmth and cold across the image. Skin tone does not go hard or orange. The preset respects faces and flesh, but gives them weight.

Forge works best with subjects that match that atmosphere: workshops, smithies, factories, industrial spaces. But portrait and documentary photographs of people working with their hands can fit just as well. A welder, a baker, a mechanic in a poorly lit garage. Anywhere the light is harsh, the space is dark, and the work shows in someone's face or hands.

You reach for Forge when a photograph needs more gravity than a standard edit can give it. When you want to show the hard side of a place or a person without pushing it too far. The preset also works well as a starting point for night photography or interiors with dark, warm spaces, an old bar, a candlelit room, a basement with exposed brick and low ceilings.

Practical tip: lower the exposure of your base image slightly before applying Forge. The preset is built for photographs that already have depth in the shadows, not for evenly lit scenes. Start at minus 0.3 to minus 0.7 stops and see what happens. That small adjustment is often enough to give the image the weight this preset is meant to carry.
