Character and mood
The Netherlands has its own light. Wide, low, sometimes almost clinical in its clarity. This preset was made for that light. Red, white and blue as a starting point: Delft blue skies, fresh green polders, white clouds with real weight behind them. You know exactly where you are the moment you look at the result.
The preset lifts the midtones without blowing out the sky. Blue deepens and becomes more saturated, but stays natural. Red accents, a bicycle, a painted door, a poppy at the edge of a ditch, come forward just a little more. The contrast is present but not heavy. Shadows stay open. The result is a photo that feels fresh, with colour that matches what you actually saw.
It works best on images where sky plays a role. Polder landscapes, dykes, windmills, open meadows. But also cityscapes with a stretch of sky above the rooflines, or architecture set in flat terrain. Outdoor portraits work well too, especially when the background has space and air in it. What works less well: busy scenes with no sky, dark interiors, evening light with warm golden tones. Those situations call for a different approach.
You reach for this preset when you want images that feel unmistakably Dutch. Not as a cliché, but as a mood. When a grey morning still held colour that the camera flattened out, or when a bright polder afternoon needs the sky to stay intact. It also works well as a base for a series: multiple photos from the same trip get a consistent look with a single click.
One practical tip: apply the preset and look at the sky first. If it comes out too dark or too saturated, adjust the exposure slider before touching anything else. For photos shot in flat, overcast light, pulling the vibrance down a notch keeps things calmer and closer to the mood of that particular day.
