The Masters

Warm, deep and bold. Steve McCurry photographed Afghanistan, India and the whole world with a Kodachrome palette that intensified his colours until they were almost unreal. Golden skin tones, saturated blue. Inspired by the style of Steve McCurry. Not affiliated with or endorsed by him.

Character and mood

Stefan Hela is a preset with a point of view. Warm, deep and bold, like a photograph that stays with you after you have moved on. The inspiration is Steve McCurry, the photographer who spent decades travelling through Afghanistan, India and beyond with Kodachrome film in his camera. His images have something that digital photography rarely delivers on its own: colours that glow without shouting, skin tones that radiate light, and a depth that pulls you in. Stefan Hela tries to capture that feeling.

What the preset actually does: it warms the midtones and raises saturation in a selective way. Oranges and yellows pick up a golden quality, blues become more intense but stay clean. Shadows are deep without going fully black, highlights are soft without clipping. The contrast is present but controlled enough to keep detail in faces. The result sits somewhere between documentary and cinematic, as if the world looks just slightly richer than it actually is.

The preset works best on photographs with people, preferably outdoors and in natural light. A street portrait, a market scene in strong side light, a face half in shadow with a patch of sun across it. Anywhere that skin tones are central and the surroundings are allowed to contribute colour to the story. Travel photography, street photography, reportage, anything that needs a warm and direct atmosphere. It works less well in cool, neutral interiors or clean architectural work, because the colour treatment is built around warmth.

You reach for Stefan Hela when you want a photograph that feels like a memory. Not polished, but real. If you have been working with flat edits for a while and notice your images are missing something you cannot quite name, this is worth testing. The preset is made for Lightroom, both Classic and the cloud version, and performs most consistently on RAW files.

One practical tip: bring your exposure down slightly before applying the preset. Stefan Hela is designed for images that have room in the shadows and highlights that are not quite blown. If you start with a bright file, you lose the depth the preset is trying to add. Apply first, then adjust exposure if something feels off. Small corrections are usually all it takes.
